A Decade of Subnational Fiscal Analysis: Growth, Decline and Middling Performance
The diverse nature of the healthcare system appears to be replicated in the diverse nature of its challenges and threats. Beginning from Nigeria’s relatively stable but growing population (approximately 5.5 live births per woman, a population growth rate of 3.2% annually, and an estimated 400 million people by 2050), the demand for healthcare services is significant, and immense pressure is put on existing health infrastructure and personnel.
This pressure from a growing and, on average, poor population comes with critical implications for the extent and handling of communicable and non-communicable diseases, maternal and neonatal mortality, nutrition, and epidemic preparedness, among other things. In addition, the geographical spread of this largely poor population raises questions about the accessibility and affordability of health services.
Objectives
- The 2024 State of States aims to examine States’ fiscal challenges, ranging from economic volatility to budget credibility, while also exploring opportunities for improving fiscal resilience.
- The 2024 State of States aims to examine public investments in healthcare by the states and articulate the administrative, operational, and fiscal challenges bedeviling the healthcare systems in the 36 states of the federation.
- The 2024 State of States aims to enhance the understanding of fiscal sustainability principles, focusing on innovative revenue generation, expenditure management, and long-term financial planning to strengthen state fiscal resilience and accountability.
- The 2024 State of States aims to facilitate collaborations among government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private sector stakeholders to tackle infrastructural deficiencies in primary healthcare, deploy creative approaches for overcoming supply chain obstacles, and enhance the accessibility of essential supplies in primary healthcare centers.
